I Bought My First Wig… Now What?

I Bought My First Wig… Now What?

If you’re a first time wig wearer, the thought of suddenly wearing alternative hair can be scary and overwhelming - especially if you don’t know anyone in your immediate circle that you can ask for advice.

While there are still a few wig salons open in bigger cities, many wig companies have switched to e-boutiques and online shopping which can be even more intimidating!

So if you’ve recently ordered or have just received your first box of hair mail - this one is for you!

The first thing you should do when you receive your hair is unbox it carefully. They are usually packaged with netting around the hair with some sort of tissue inside the cap to maintain the form.

Take the wig out of the package, feel the hair texture & inspect the cap. Keep in mind that the actual colour may vary from what you saw on your computer or phone screen - however it shouldn’t be like night and day.

You should then try on the cap for size. If the cap contains a black elastic band on the inside, you should adjust it slightly. Then adjust the little “bra strap” clips near the nape of the neck.

Every cap is different, depending on whether it is an open wefted cap, closed weft, fully hand tied or a medical cap.

However, regardless of the cap type, be sure to put the wig on to test for size.

If the wig contains ear tabs, adjust them slightly to ensure they are not pressing down on your ears.

You do not want the cap to be too loose as it will slip, however, you also don’t want it to be too tight, as it may give you a headaches or irritate your scalp. If you are unsure of how the cap should fit, don’t hesitate to reach out to the seller to ask follow up questions.

Always ensure the cap fits before making any alterations or cutting the lace.

Once you are happy with the fit, you may want to practice wearing the wig around your house for an hour or so before wearing it out in public, so that you can get used to the way it feels on your head.

Remember, that no matter how amazing the wig is, it can be overwhelming and emotional when wearing alternative hair.

It can also take time to recognize yourself in the mirror. Take it at your own pace!

It’s also important to note that as a first time wig wearer, buying the right products to care for your wig will make a world of difference. Avoiding shampoos and conditioners containing SLS, as well as using a heat protectant before styling will help maintain the life span of your wig!
