Travel & TSA: Wig Wearing Edition

Travel & TSA: Wig Wearing Edition

At this point in time I am sure we have all seen the video of the lady going through TSA with her ball cap on and it wasn’t until she tossed it back to her husband, that she realized her wig was attached to her hat.

& if that’s the case, you’ve probably been worried that you’d get flagged due to wearing a wig or topper when going through security at the airport.

BUT I’m here to tell you that *NEVER* have I ever been pulled aside due to wearing wigs -

I’ve been pulled aside almost every time due to excess liquids or have had my hands swabbed while travelling with my pets, but I can honestly say, not once in all my travels have I been questioned about my “hair” or lack thereof.

*knock on wood*

That’s not to say that it doesn’t happen, but knowing that you have the right to ask for a private room when getting searched makes a huge difference. TSA cannot ask you to remove your wig (unless you’re hiding something under it of course).

If you take away the fear of going through security, travelling with wigs can actually be fun and people will be jealous of your perfectly styled hair!

Here’s some travel tips that Danielle and I put together:

-Bring atleast two wigs. If you’re planning to wear a wig near the pool or on the beach, make sure you pack a second hand wig or a synthetic.

-Pack a wig brush or comb: Bring a brush or comb specifically designed for wigs to help keep your wig tangle-free and looking great.

-Pack a small heat protectant: this is important for when you’re styling your wigs! You can also bring a travel sized wig shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair fresh(as the hotel shampoo will not do the trick and could potentially damage the hair).

-Store your wigs in silk bags! If you don’t have a silk bag, a ziploc bag could work but ensure you unpack them during your stay!

-Bring a scarf or bandanna for cute styles especially if travelling somewhere humid. If you’re going to bring a hat, make sure it isn’t too tight as you don’t want to damage the knots!

-Bring a travel sized wig stand or head. This will help keep your wig in shape while on the go. (But don’t leave just sitting in the room if you’re having room service. You don’t want to give the maids a scare).

When traveling with a wig, it's important to bring essential items to ensure that your wig stays in good condition and that you can properly care for it while on the go. We listed just a few above, but please comment or let us know what some of your essential “wig travel” items are!

Don’t let the fear of going through security and TSA stop you from wearing your hair on your next vacation or business trip!
